  I think I remember reading that the Mandaens are kind of chauvinistic. They are the last surviving sect of ancient gnosticism however, and exist in the area of Iraq/Iran. They are a persecuted group.
  
  Elaine Pagels wrote a book on the Johannites, but it is out of print, and very expensive. They do, however, have a website.

  I just posted a news article I found from BBC on the Mandeans and how they are facing extinction. you can check it on my tribe page it has a few links to the Mandean people, history etc.
